About

Dharmic Détournement is a project devoted to speculative and experimental engagement with Buddhist materials, that seeks to work towards the collective project of producing a new ‘image of practice’ for Western Buddhism. It seeks to employ Buddhist materials (texts, concepts, practices etc), both traditional and modern and re-read and re-imagine them. This re-imagining is in part enacted through reading Buddhist materials through theoretical frameworks provided by Western philosophy, critical theory, psychoanalysis, and the like, and in part through an ongoing practice of lived experimentation with said materials. Here theory is understood as part of practice (praxis), rather than something that is distinct or separate from practice, as is often the case in Western Buddhism. My intention here is not to produce a totalising theory or critique, but rather to engage with said material/s in a manner that is open-ended, experimental, and generative, that can hopefully produce materials that can be of use to others.
